11-year-old Jessie lives with her widowed mum in the Bay of Plenty. With the rising cost-of-living and Jessie battling a multitude of health conditions – including a tumour on her leg – times have been tough for this household of two.
Since her partner passed away, Jessie’s mum Kristine has struggled to make ends meet. “It’s not easy being a solo mum,” she explains. “Jessie was getting bullied for the clothes she would wear, but school uniforms are so expensive and it’s difficult to keep up now that I’m the sole parent. I can only work around looking after Jessie, so there's never any money spare for extras.”
All proceeds from our 2024 Car Raffle will be contributed to Variety’s Individual Grants programme which helps to provide children like Jessie with the essentials that we all too often take for granted – pants so that she doesn't have to wear hand-me-downs, a school uniform that actually fits and gumboots for walking to school in winter.
